About the Hack
The Department of Social Development keeps a publicly accessible record of all registered non profit organisations (NPOs) in South Africa. We've taken all that data (85248 NPOs!) and placed them onto a map, based on their street addresses, using Google Fusion Tables. In addition we've created maps per province with a basic search feature that will allows the user to filter their results according to sector of activity.
The full built-in search feature on Google Fusion Tables allows more flexibility in the search e.g. show me all the education NPOs in Observatory, Cape Town. This feature can be accessed here for the Western Cape as an example.
The number of NPOs in South Africa has been steadily increasing over the years, most of which are run by volunteers. This website is dedicated to them - thank you all for making South Africa a ever increasingly better place to live!
Who is this for?
We hope that this resource will help NPOs to locate other similar organisations in the country (or their neighbourhoods) such that they may network easier in order to enhance their efforts.
It can also be used by journalists to compare with, e.g. prevalence of disease or location and frequency of service delivery protests, etc. Volunteers can also use this as a resource to figure out where they could help (LeadSA and all that...)
Known Bugs
The NPOs are located by address automatically. We have tried to clean up the data as much as possible but some may still be place on the map in the wrong locations. There are two possible reasons for that: (a) Google Maps interprets the address data funnily (we are not in the U.S.) and (b) the address is mistyped.
If you spot a misplaced NPO, let us know by sending us a message on twitter or by email. Google Fusion Table and Mapping gurus are welcome to come help us improve the hack!
